Image-making from the pre-digital 90s to today

Saturday 2nd May 3:30 - 4:30pm
Saint Cloche Gallery, 37 MacDonald St, Paddington NSW

Join us for a conversation centred around Max Doyle’s exhibition Scrap Forever, and how identity is shaped, captured, and re-seen through the image.

A pioneering force in 90s fashion photography, Doyle emerged from London’s grunge era, a moment that redefined the image through instinct, immediacy, and an elegant rebellion against polish. This was the era of influential editorial platforms, from The Face to i-D, where image-making was physical, intuitive, and culturally charged.

Across his career, Doyle has photographed a vast cross-section of cultural figures, from Kylie Minogue to Billie Eilish, Travis Scott to Margot Robbie, alongside models such as Emma Balfour, Jaime King and Kate Bell, to name only a few. His images have appeared across leading publications including Vogue and The Face, among many others, shaping the visual language of their time.

Working internationally, Doyle has travelled extensively, from remote desert landscapes to construction sites, rural communities and urban environments, bringing a raw, instinctive approach to image-making across diverse contexts. He is also co-founder of doingbird, an independent editorial platform known for its unguarded, instinct-driven approach to image-making. Now, in a later chapter of his practice, Doyle steps in front of the lens as both subject and photographer.

The discussion will consider the relevance of analogue image-making today - is it a thing of the past, or does it offer something increasingly vital? What defines Doyle’s eye, and why does it continue to resonate across decades?

From editorial production to archive to reworking, the panel will explore how images move through time, shifting in meaning as they are revisited, recontextualised, and collected.

There will also be a rare opportunity to view a selection of magazines from the era, many no longer in publication, alongside Max Doyle’s original scrapbooks, offering a more intimate glimpse into the material language and process behind the work.
